Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why have a funeral?

A: Death is the most significant rite of passage that we experience. As such, it is only fitting that we acknowledge the event with some type of ceremony. Having a funeral offers a number of psychological benefits for those left behind. It allows us to realize the person is truly gone, and begin the grief process.

Q: Who to notify when death occurs?

A: When a person dies, certain authorities must be notified. For example: the local police must be contacted if the death happens at home. Whether the death happens at home, a hospital, a nursing home, or out of the state, please call us at Voran Funeral Home at any time (313) 928-2300. Our staff of professionals is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We will make the necessary arrangements and notify the proper authorities. We will also set up a time for you and your family to meet with a funeral director to make the arrangements of your choice.

Q: What do I bring to the arrangements?

A: You will need to bring in the clothing that you want your loved one to be dressed in for the visitation including undergarments, shoes are optional. Also, please bring in a birth certificate and drivers license (if available), a recent photo, the deceased Social Security number and his or her parents names. If your loved one was in the armed forces, bring in the honorable discharge papers (we will make a copy).

Q: Is embalming required by law?

A: No. Embalming may be necessary if you select certain arrangements, such as a funeral with visitation, shipping out of the state or to another country, embalming is required. If you do not want embalming you usually have the right to choose an arrangement that does not require it such as immediate burial or direct cremation.

Q: Why do embalming?

A: Embalming is a process of sanitizing, temporarily preserving and enhances the appearance of the body.

Q: If I decide on cremation can I still have a funeral with viewing?

A: Yes, quite often some sort of viewing precedes the actual cremation. We will assist you with the necessary information for a funeral at Voran Funeral Home or a church with a cremation following. We offer a rental casket so you can either rent or buy a casket.

Q: What is cremation?

A: Cremation is a process where the body is reduced to an ash-like material, under condition of extreme heat.
