Caskets

While the options are many, there are beautiful casket selections in every price range. With caskets, material, design and special features are the primary considerations.

Wood and metal are the most commonly used materials. In addition to traditional wood and metal, alternative choices such as wood covered in cloth and wood veneers are available. Metal is treasured for its strength, durability and elegance. Bronze and copper are the most durable metals and are non-rusting, and are more expensive. Stainless and carbon steel are less expensive and come in different gauges of thickness.

Wood is valued for its warmth and natural beauty. Hardwood caskets are made of solid wood, such as mahogany, walnut, cherry, maple, oak, poplar and pine. Pricing is much like that of solid wood furniture. Harder woods, such as mahogany, walnut, and cherry are at the high end. Pine and poplar are at the low end. Mid-range materials include oak, birch, and maple.

A less expensive alternative to solid hardwood is wood veneer. Cloth-covered fiber board or pressed wood are the least expensive caskets.

Also impacting casket selection is the styling and finishes. Some have graceful curves and high-quality interior linings, others have simpler lines and interior linings. Personalization options may also determine a casket choice.
